Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of earning mentions and citations inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Claude. A GEO strategy is the plan that gets you there. Rankings are no longer the finish line. When an AI answers a buyer's question, the question becomes: does it name you, and does it link to you?
This page is the blueprint. It sits under our GEO hub and links out to the deeper tactical pages. Read it top to bottom once, then run it as a loop.
Why you need a strategy, not tactics
Most teams treat GEO as a checklist: add some statistics, drop in a quote, ship an FAQ. Those tactics work, but without a strategy they produce scattered wins you can't defend or repeat. Measurement is the biggest gap in GEO today. Marketers have refined Google Analytics dashboards and almost no comparable visibility into AI search. A strategy closes that gap by tying every action to a metric.
The other reason: AI engines fragment. Only about 11% of the domains ChatGPT cites overlap with the domains Perplexity cites (Data-Mania). Winning one engine does not win the others. A strategy forces you to decide which engines matter for your buyers and track them separately.
The four moves
1. Map the prompts
Start with the questions your buyers actually type into AI tools, not the keywords you rank for. Group them into intent clusters: problem-aware ("why is my X slow"), solution-aware ("best tool for Y"), and brand-comparison ("X vs Y"). Prompt-level visibility is the unit of GEO, so your map is your scoreboard. Every prompt is a slot you either fill or lose.
For each prompt, record which engines matter and who currently gets cited. That competitor snapshot becomes your baseline.
2. Publish citable answers
AI engines cite content that is easy to lift and hard to dispute. The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) found five modifications that raise citation rates by roughly 30-41%: adding statistics, adding direct quotations, citing sources, improving fluency, and using an authoritative voice (DerivateX summary). Statistics, source citations, and quotations were the three strongest.
The practical rule: original research, proprietary data, and specific numbers give an engine a reason to pick you over a generic alternative. A benchmark study or a unique dataset outperforms another round of thin blog posts. Deeper how-to lives in our GEO optimization guide.
3. Structure for retrieval
Where you place the answer matters. Princeton's data shows 44% of AI citations come from the first third of a page. Lead with the answer. Then reinforce it with structure: clear headings, FAQ schema, and inline citations. Pages with FAQ schema and inline citations are weighted materially higher in source selection, and structural signals help pages survive retrieval-heavy pipelines.
A simple structural pattern that works:
| Element | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 40-60 word answer capsule up top | Gives the engine a liftable summary |
| Short declarative headings | Lets retrieval match sub-questions |
| Tables and bulleted lists | Machine-readable, easy to quote |
| FAQ block with schema | Directly maps to conversational queries |
| Inline source citations | Signals verifiability |
4. Measure and iterate
You cannot improve what you don't count. Track four metrics: mention rate (share of prompts where you appear), share of voice (your mentions vs competitors), citation rate (how often engines link your domain), and average position in the answer. Run each prompt multiple times before trusting the number, because AI outputs vary. Ten runs per prompt is a reasonable floor. Full detail is in our GEO metrics page.
Sequencing the work
A strategy is only as good as its order of operations. Run it as a quarterly loop:
Weeks 1-2 — Baseline. Build the prompt map, capture current share of voice per engine.
Weeks 3-6 — Produce. Fix or write the highest-intent pages first, applying the citable-answer and structure moves.
Weeks 7-10 — Instrument. Stand up measurement and let engines re-crawl.
Weeks 11-12 — Read and reprioritize. Compare share of voice to baseline, kill what didn't move, double down on what did.

Common strategy mistakes
Chasing every engine at once. Pick the two or three your buyers use and win those first.
Optimizing pages you can't measure. If a page isn't tied to a tracked prompt, you're guessing.
One-and-done publishing. Citations decay as competitors add fresher data. Refresh on a cadence.
Blending engines into one average. Because citation overlap between engines is low, an average hides which engine is failing.
FAQ
What is a GEO strategy?
It's a repeatable plan to make AI engines cite your content: map buyer prompts, publish data-backed answers, structure pages for retrieval, and measure share of voice per engine.
How is GEO strategy different from SEO strategy?
SEO targets a ranked list of links. GEO targets the answer itself. The goal shifts from position on a results page to being named and cited inside a generated response.
How long does a GEO strategy take to show results?
Expect a quarter. Engines need to re-crawl after you publish, and metrics only stabilize once you've run each prompt multiple times across weeks.
Do I need original data to compete in GEO?
It's the strongest lever. Statistics, proprietary datasets, and quotes are the modifications that most reliably lift citation rates, per the Princeton GEO study.
Should I track all AI engines the same way?
No. Citation overlap between engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity is roughly 11%, so track each separately rather than as a blended average.
How do I know if my GEO strategy is working?
Watch mention rate, share of voice, citation rate, and answer position trend week over week against your competitor baseline.
