02

Generate a clean, valid llms.txt file for your site in seconds

Paste your key pages and this tool produces a properly formatted llms.txt file: a Markdown document that gives AI agents and developer tools a concise, curated map of your site. Download it, drop it at your root, and give machine readers a clean starting point. Free, no signup.

Before you spend an hour on this, here is the honest version most generators skip.

The honest part: what llms.txt does and does not do

llms.txt was proposed by Answer.AI's Jeremy Howard in September 2024 as a Markdown file that gives LLMs concise context about your site and links to your important pages (Contentful). Good idea. The problem is the marketing that grew around it.

It does not currently improve your AI citations. No major AI company (OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google) documents llms.txt as a citation signal or ranking factor. Google has said explicitly you do not need llms.txt to appear in AI search (Webyes / John Mueller). Large-scale studies back this up: SE Ranking analyzed roughly 300,000 domains and found no statistically significant correlation between having an llms.txt file and being cited more often, with only one of the 50 most-cited domains using one (SE Ranking). Separately, an analysis of 137,000 sites found 97% of their llms.txt files received zero traffic (SE Ranking).

So if a vendor tells you an llms.txt file will get you cited in ChatGPT, that claim is not supported by evidence today.

Where it is genuinely useful: as a clean, machine-readable index for the agents and dev tools that do read it, on their own terms. Coding assistants, documentation bots, internal RAG pipelines, and custom agents can consume a well-structured llms.txt to navigate your content faster. If you run docs, an API, or a developer product, that is a real, if narrow, benefit. It is low cost, does no harm, and might matter more later. Treat it as tidy infrastructure, not a growth hack.

How it works

  1. Add your site name and a one-line description. This becomes the header block.

  2. List your key pages or docs sections. Title, URL, and an optional short summary for each. Group them (Docs, Guides, API, About) if you like.

  3. Generate. The tool outputs valid llms.txt Markdown, correctly structured with an H1, a blockquote summary, and organized link sections.

  4. Download and upload. Place the file at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

What the result gives you

A valid llms.txt file you can serve immediately, plus a plain-language note on realistic expectations so you deploy it for the right reason. You get a curated index that machine readers can parse, without pretending it is a citation lever it is not.

llms.txt vs. the things that actually move AI visibility

If your goal is being cited by AI, spend your time here first, then add llms.txt as housekeeping:

Tactic Helps AI citations today? Effort
Unblocking AI crawlers in robots.txt Yes, prerequisite Low
Server-rendered, readable content Yes Medium
Answer-first, quotable page structure Yes Medium
Being an authoritative, linked source Yes Ongoing
llms.txt file No proven effect Low

The point of the table is not that llms.txt is bad. It is that llms.txt is cheap and unproven, while the items above it are proven and worth doing first.

FAQ

What is an llms.txt file?

A Markdown file placed at your site root that gives LLMs and AI agents a concise, curated overview of your site and links to your most important pages. It was proposed in September 2024.

Does llms.txt improve my ranking in ChatGPT or Perplexity?

There is no evidence it does. No major AI provider uses it as a citation or ranking signal, and large studies found no correlation between having the file and being cited more. Treat any claim otherwise as unproven.

So why generate one at all?

Because some agents and developer tools do read it to navigate your content more efficiently. If you run docs, an API, or a dev product, it is useful low-cost infrastructure. It also does no harm to have.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?

At your root: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt, the same place you keep robots.txt.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt controls which crawlers may access your site and is widely respected. llms.txt is an optional content index with no official adoption by the major AI platforms.

Is this generator free?

Yes, completely. Generating and downloading your llms.txt costs nothing.

Generate your llms.txt, then fix what actually matters

Build your file above in seconds. Then, if you care about being cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, run the check that looks at the things with real evidence behind them: crawler access, readability, and answer-first structure.
