GEO Metrics: Measuring AI Search Visibility (2026)

In short

The core GEO metrics are presence (share of prompts where your brand appears), share of voice (your mentions vs competitors), and citation rate (how often engines link your domain). Measure each per engine, run every prompt 10+ times before trusting a number, and trend weekly against a competitor baseline.

GEO metrics tell you whether your generative visibility is growing or shrinking. Measurement is the single biggest gap in GEO today: most teams have detailed Google Analytics dashboards and almost no comparable read on AI search (Search Engine Land). This page defines the metrics, gives the formulas, and sets benchmarks. It's the measurement layer of a full GEO strategy and sits in the GEO cluster.

01

The three core metrics

Presence (mention rate)

Presence is the share of your tracked prompts where the engine mentions your brand at all.

Presence = (prompts mentioning your brand ÷ total prompts in the set) × 100

It's the simplest read on whether you exist in the answer space. A mention names your brand even if no link is attached.

Share of voice

Share of voice compares your presence to competitors across the same prompt set.

Share of voice = (answers mentioning your brand ÷ all answers in the prompt set) × 100

This is the competitive metric. Presence tells you if you show up. Share of voice tells you whether you're winning the room. Some teams call the citation-weighted version "share of answer."

Citation rate

Citation rate measures how often an engine links your actual domain as a source, not just names you.

Citation rate = (citations of your domain ÷ all citations across the prompt set) × 100

The distinction is load-bearing: a mention happens when the AI names your brand; a citation happens when it links your content as a source (Data-Mania). You want both, and they move independently. You can be mentioned often but rarely cited, which usually means competitors own the sourced explanation of your own category.

02

Supporting metrics

Metric What it tells you
Recommendation rank Your average position when named in an answer
Prompt coverage How many buyer-intent prompts include your brand
Sentiment mix Whether mentions are positive, neutral, or negative
Topic coverage Which topics you appear in vs which you're absent from
03

Benchmarks for 2026

Absolute targets depend on your market, but published benchmarks give a floor:

  • A healthy share of answer runs 8-20% for B2B software leaders and 4-12% for consumer brands (lseo).

  • Gaps are wide. Top SaaS brands earn roughly 8.4x more AI citations than their competitors (Data-Mania).

Treat these as orientation, not goals. Your real target is beating your own baseline and your named competitors on the prompts that drive revenue.

04

How to measure without fooling yourself

AI outputs vary run to run, so a single query is noise. Three rules keep your numbers honest:

  1. Sample repeatedly. Run each prompt 10 or more times before treating a rate as stable. Profound's shopping methodology used 10+ runs, a reasonable floor for any per-prompt metric.

  2. Measure per engine, never blended. Only about 11% of the domains ChatGPT cites overlap with Perplexity's. A blended average hides which engine is failing. Keep a column per engine.

  3. Trend, don't snapshot. Share of voice is most useful trended weekly or monthly against a competitor benchmark. A single reading tells you almost nothing.

05

A simple measurement setup

  1. Define the prompt set. Pull it from your buyer-question map. Fix it so week-over-week numbers are comparable.

  2. Pick the engines your buyers use. Track each separately.

  3. Run each prompt 10+ times per engine on a fixed cadence.

  4. Record presence, share of voice, citation rate, and average rank.

  5. Compare to last period and to competitors. Act on the deltas, not the absolutes.

06

Turning metrics into action

Metrics are only useful if they route work:

  • Low presence, low citation on a high-intent prompt: you have no citable page. Write one using the GEO optimization guide.

  • High presence, low citation: you're named but not sourced. Add statistics, quotes, and inline citations so the engine links you.

  • Falling share of voice: a competitor published fresher data. Refresh your page.

  • Strong on one engine, absent on another: the engines cite different domains. Build engine-specific coverage.

FAQ

What are the most important GEO metrics?

Presence (mention rate), share of voice, and citation rate. Presence shows if you appear, share of voice shows if you beat competitors, and citation rate shows if engines link your domain.

What's the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is when the AI names your brand. A citation is when it links your content as a source. They move independently and you should track both.

What's a good share of voice in AI search?

Published benchmarks put a healthy share of answer at 8-20% for B2B software leaders and 4-12% for consumer brands, but beating your own baseline and competitors matters more.

How many times should I run each prompt?

At least 10 times per engine. AI outputs vary, so a single run is noise. Ten runs is a reasonable floor before a rate is stable.

Can I average my metrics across AI engines?

No. Citation overlap between engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity is only around 11%, so a blended average hides which engine is underperforming. Track each separately.

How often should I measure GEO?

Trend weekly or monthly against a fixed prompt set and a competitor benchmark. Snapshots tell you almost nothing; deltas tell you what's working.

Summary of what was produced:

Slug Target query Angle
/geo/geo-strategy geo strategy 4-move blueprint + quarterly sequencing loop
/geo/geo-tools geo tools 4 tool categories (tracker/monitor/optimizer/auditor), links to /best/geo-tools without re-ranking
/geo/geo-optimization-guide geo optimization 9-step content optimization for generative retrieval
/geo/geo-metrics geo metrics presence, share of voice, citation rate with formulas + benchmarks

Every page includes: SEO title, 150-160 char meta description, URL slug, target query, 40-60 word answer capsule, full body with tables/lists, 6-Q&A FAQPage block, and the soft CTA (free €0/50pp, €9 report, €19/mo per domain). All link up to /geo and cross-link within the cluster without duplicating.

Facts verified via WebSearch and cited inline:

- Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024): 5 modifications lift citations ~30-41%; +115.1% visibility for rank-5 pages adding citations; 44% of citations from first third of page

- ~11% domain overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity citations (track engines separately)

- Share of answer benchmarks: 8-20% B2B software, 4-12% consumer; top SaaS earn ~8.4x more citations

- 10+ runs per prompt sampling floor (Profound methodology)

- Mention vs citation distinction and metric formulas

Voice kept sharp/practitioner, no hype, no em dashes. Note: I did not have a confirmed live URL for the /geo hub or /best/geo-tools page, so I linked them as relative paths per the cluster structure you specified. If those slugs differ, flag them and I'll adjust the internal links.
