How to Appear in Google AI Overviews (2026 Guide)

In short

Answer first: Google AI Overviews are drawn almost entirely from pages already ranking in Search: 99.5% of AI Overview sources match a page in the top 10 organic results. To appear, rank in the top 10 for the query, let Googlebot crawl you, and answer the question directly in extractable, well-structured passages.

01

How AI Overviews retrieve and cite

The most important thing to understand is that AI Overviews are not a separate index. They are generated by a custom Gemini model on top of Google's existing search results. seoClarity's analysis of 36,000 keywords found that AI Overview sources now match one or more of the top 10 organic results 99.5% of the time, up from earlier SGE numbers where sources diverged from the top 10 the majority of the time (Search Engine Land). As their VP put it, "AI Overview optimization is now just Google optimization."

That reframes the whole task. You are not optimizing for a new bot or a new algorithm. The crawler that matters is Googlebot, the same one that powers classic Search. AI Overviews build on the live Googlebot index, so your ability to appear depends on being crawled, indexed, and ranked in the normal way (Fokal).

This is where a common mistake creeps in. Google-Extended is not the crawler for AI Overviews. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that controls only whether your content is used to train Gemini and other generative products. Google's own documentation states that blocking Google-Extended has no effect on Search rankings, indexing, or AI Overview eligibility, because AI Overviews draw on the Googlebot search index, not the training index (Trakkr). Block Google-Extended if you want to opt out of training, and you will still appear in AI Overviews. Block Googlebot, and you disappear from both Search and AI Overviews.

Within the candidate set of top-ranking pages, the Gemini layer picks passages that most directly and confidently answer the specific sub-questions inside the query, then cites 3 to 6 of them.

02

Step-by-step playbook

  1. Verify Googlebot access and indexing. In Google Search Console, confirm the page is indexed and not blocked. Do not confuse Google-Extended with Googlebot: the former controls training only, the latter controls whether you exist in Search at all.

  2. Rank in the top 10 for the query. With 99.5% of AI Overview sources coming from the top 10, ranking is the gate. Everything you already do for organic ranking, quality content, links, technical health, is your AI Overview strategy.

  3. Map the query's sub-questions and answer each. AI Overviews synthesise across multiple pages to answer a cluster of related sub-questions. Break your page into clearly headed sections, each answering one sub-question in a self-contained passage.

  4. Write extractable passages. Lead each section with a direct 40 to 60 word answer, then expand. The Gemini layer lifts confident, complete passages, so give it clean sentences it can quote.

  5. Cover the topic with depth and structure. Use descriptive H2s and H3s, short paragraphs, ordered lists for processes, and tables for comparisons. Structured content is easier to extract and cite (Search Engine Land).

  6. Strengthen E-E-A-T signals. Named authors with credentials, cited primary sources, clear publish and update dates, and factual accuracy all raise the odds your passage is chosen over a competitor's.

  7. Keep pages current. Refresh statistics, dates, and examples. Stale pages get displaced by fresher top-10 competitors.

What does NOT work

  • Blocking Google-Extended to change AI Overviews. It does nothing to your AI Overview presence. It only opts you out of Gemini training. This is the single most misunderstood point in the space.

  • Trying to rank "for AI Overviews" separately from Search. There is no separate index or algorithm to game. AI Overview optimization is Google optimization.

  • Thin pages that rank on links alone. If your passage does not answer the sub-question cleanly, a competitor's will be quoted instead, even if you rank near them.

  • Schema markup as the primary tactic. Structured data can help Google understand your page, but it does not override the need to rank in the top 10 and write extractable answers.

  • Keyword stuffing. The Gemini layer selects for clear, confident answers, not keyword density.

FAQ

Which crawler do I need to allow for Google AI Overviews?

Googlebot. AI Overviews are generated on top of Google's regular search index, so if Googlebot can crawl and index you and you rank, you are eligible.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls only whether your content trains Gemini. Google states blocking it has no impact on Search rankings, indexing, or AI Overview eligibility.

How often do AI Overview sources match the top 10 organic results?

99.5% of the time, per seoClarity's analysis of 36,000 keywords. In practice, ranking in the top 10 is the prerequisite for being cited.

How many sources does an AI Overview cite?

Usually 3 to 6, chosen from top-ranking pages that most directly answer the query's sub-questions.

Is there a special way to optimize for AI Overviews?

Not really. It is classic Google optimization plus answer-first, well-structured passages so the Gemini layer can extract and quote you.

Do I need schema markup to appear?

No. Schema can help Google understand your page but is not required or sufficient. Ranking and extractable answers matter far more.
