The one-line difference
SEO earns a position on a results page. GEO earns a place inside the answer the model writes. That is the whole reframe. Everything else follows from it.
Both practices start from the same raw material: well-structured, credible, relevant content on a crawlable site. The split happens at the endpoint. SEO's endpoint is a blue link the user has to click. GEO's endpoint is a sentence in a composed answer, ideally with your name attached as a source.
Where GEO reframes optimization
From ranking to retrieval. SEO tries to move a URL up a ranked list. GEO tries to make a passage retrievable and quotable. A model chunks your page, embeds the chunks, and pulls the ones that best answer the query. Optimization shifts toward self-contained, clearly-scoped passages that survive that chunking.
From keywords to claims. SEO leans on matching query keywords. GEO leans on making verifiable claims the model wants to reuse. The Princeton study found that adding statistics, quotations, and citations to authoritative sources measurably raised visibility, while generic phrasing did not [Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024, arXiv:2311.09735].
From clicks to citations. The SEO scoreboard is rankings, traffic, and click-through rate. The GEO scoreboard is share of answer: how often you are cited, how prominently, and whether the engine attributes you. The Princeton paper had to invent metrics for this, Position-Adjusted Word Count and Subjective Impression, because ranking position no longer captured the outcome.
From one engine to many. SEO is dominated by Google's ranking model. GEO spreads across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot, each assembling answers differently. You optimize the content once and it has to travel across engines.
Side-by-side
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a link | Get cited in an answer |
| Endpoint | Results page position | Sentence inside a generated answer |
| Primary reader | Human scanning results | Retrieval model + LLM |
| Unit optimized | The page / the URL | The passage / the claim |
| Winning cue | Backlinks, authority, keyword match | Statistics, quotes, cited sources, fluency |
| Success metric | Rankings, traffic, CTR | Citation share, prominence, attribution |
| Engines | Mostly Google | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, Copilot |
| Failure mode | Ranks low, few clicks | Answer generated without citing you |
What stays the same
Do not throw SEO away. The overlap is large and load-bearing. A page still has to be crawlable, indexed, fast, and genuinely relevant before any engine, ranked or generative, will use it. Good information architecture, clean HTML, and topical depth serve both. GEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement for it. If your fundamentals are broken, GEO tactics have nothing to stand on.
What actually changes in your workflow
The practical delta is small edits with an outsized effect. Instead of chasing one more backlink, you:
Answer the real question in the first 40 to 60 words of the page.
Back claims with concrete statistics and named sources.
Add relevant, attributable quotations.
Tighten fluency so passages read cleanly out of context.
Structure content so a model can lift a self-contained chunk.
These are the same moves the Princeton study measured, and they are covered in detail on GEO techniques. For the broader map of the field, see the GEO pillar. If AEO is also on your radar, GEO vs AEO disambiguates the two.
FAQ
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO. A page still needs to be crawlable, indexed, and relevant before a generative engine will consider it. GEO adds a citation-focused layer on top.
Can I do GEO without doing SEO first?
Not really. If your content is not retrievable and credible, GEO tactics have nothing to work with. Solid SEO fundamentals are the prerequisite.
What is the single biggest difference between GEO and SEO?
The endpoint. SEO aims to rank a clickable link; GEO aims to be quoted inside the AI-written answer.
Do GEO and SEO use different content?
Mostly the same content, optimized differently. GEO emphasizes statistics, quotations, cited sources, and clean passage structure over pure keyword and backlink signals.
How do I measure GEO if rankings do not apply?
By share of answer: how often you are cited across engines, how prominently, and whether you are attributed. The Princeton paper formalized this with Position-Adjusted Word Count and Subjective Impression.
Which should a small team prioritize?
Keep SEO fundamentals healthy, then layer GEO edits onto your highest-intent pages. The GEO changes are cheap and reuse work you have already done.
