SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Changes When AI Answers the Query

By Peiyao Qiu · Founder, Pyratz Corp ·

SEO optimizes for ranked links on a results page. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes to be cited inside AI answers on engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the academic/technical term for the same goal - the Princeton paper that coined it studied how content strategies change AI citation rates. In practice, AEO and GEO are near-synonyms.

The three terms, defined

Term Full name Optimizes for Origin SEO Search Engine Optimization Ranking in link-based results 1990s AEO Answer Engine Optimization Being the cited answer ~2023-24, industry GEO Generative Engine Optimization Visibility inside generative answers Nov 2023, Princeton et al.

AEO and GEO describe the same objective - get your content used and cited by AI answer engines. GEO is the term academics and some tools prefer; AEO is more common in marketing. Don't overthink the distinction.

What actually changes when AI answers the query

The unit of competition changes

SEO competes for a position. AEO/GEO competes to be the extracted passage. A page ranked #4 can still be the sentence ChatGPT quotes - or a page ranked #1 can be ignored if its answer is buried.

The metric changes

With 68% of Google searches now zero-click (early 2026), "we rank #1" no longer guarantees traffic. Being in the answer is the new position zero.

The tactics change

The Princeton GEO study (GEO-Bench, 10,000 queries, nine methods) found what moves generative visibility:

Where they overlap (a lot)

This is the part most "SEO is dead" takes miss:

So classic SEO (crawlability, quality, links) is the foundation; AEO/GEO is the extraction layer on top. You don't replace one with the other.

How to prioritize in 2026

  1. Keep doing SEO - it feeds most AI engines' retrieval.
  2. Add AEO on top - answer-first structure, stats, schema, freshness.
  3. Build consensus - Reddit, G2, Wikipedia mentions (especially for Perplexity/ChatGPT).
  4. Measure citations, not just rankings.

FAQ

Is GEO different from AEO?

Functionally, no. GEO (from the 2023 Princeton paper) and AEO (industry term) both mean optimizing to be cited by generative AI engines. GEO tends to be used in research and technical contexts; AEO in marketing. Pick whichever term fits your audience - the underlying tactics are identical.

Did SEO die because of AEO?

No. Most AI engines retrieve from search indexes - Perplexity mirrors Google's top-10 ~91% of the time - so weak SEO undermines AEO. What's changed is that ranking alone no longer guarantees clicks, since ~68% of searches are zero-click. SEO is the foundation, not a casualty.

Which should a small team focus on first?

Fix SEO fundamentals first: be crawlable, indexed, and publish quality content. Then layer AEO tactics on top - answer-first intros, statistics, FAQ schema, and freshness. These compound, so a small, well-structured, fact-dense page can be cited even without large domain authority.

Where did GEO come from?

The term was introduced in "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (Aggarwal, Murahari et al., Princeton/AI2/Georgia Tech/IIT Delhi, arXiv Nov 2023), which built GEO-Bench and measured which content strategies improve AI citation rates across generative answer engines.
